LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County Department of Family and Children Services is looking for two outstanding volunteers who would like to give of their time and talents to see that Gwinnett children in the custody of the state have a wonderful Christmas.
As the Foster Children's Christmas Coordinator, one volunteer would work from the Gwinnett DFCS office in Lawrenceville, communicating with businesses, organizations and individuals who are interested in sponsoring a child for Christmas and matching them to the children of their choice. This position, starting in mid-October, requires software proficiency, excellent communication and organizational skills and approximately 20 to 25 hours per week on site. The hours of 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday would be the preferable hours of commitment.
"We're looking for a volunteer who has a real heart for our children," said Deborah Barinowski, the volunteer resource coordinator for Gwinnett DFCS, "someone who can share, with the prospective sponsors, their enthusiasm for bringing joy to a child who has had very little of that commodity in their life."
DFCS is also looking for a volunteer who would wear the hat of toy store coordinator. This person in this position would be responsible for recruiting and organizing volunteers to work in the toy store, where generic toy donations come in, as well as other tasks associated with the Christmas project. The volunteer would headquarter in his or her own home prior to December with most of the time spent in the Lawrenceville toy store in early December through Christmas and shutting down the operation in January.
"These holiday positions are really 'callings' instead of jobs," Barinowski said. "Each is a lot of work in terms of time and energy given, but every day brings many joys and definite feelings of great satisfaction as you connect generous donors and volunteers with each child or teen who so badly needs their care and support."
"I know there is the perfect person who will feel a Godly pull on their heart strings to respond to our request for each designation," Barinowski added. "We just have to open the door and encourage their philanthropic spirit."
Interested individuals are asked to call Barinowski at 678-518-5758 or e-mail her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
