Authorities ID man slain at Norcross hotel

NORCROSS - Authorities identified a man slain at a Norcross extended stay hotel this week as 48-year-old Robert W. Montgomery of Ohio.

His killer remains at large, police said.

"At this point, we don't have a person of interest," Norcross police Capt. Brian Harr said. "We're following up on several leads that do look promising."

Montgomery was shot once in the neck just after midnight Wednesday during an attempted robbery in his room at the Allaround Suites on Medlock Bridge Road. A male acquaintance of his was also assaulted in the room but wasn't seriously injured, Harr said.

The suspects demanded money before shooting Montgomery, who was found outside the room, authorities said. He was later pronounced dead at Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth.

"It all started in the room," Harr said. "We don't know how they got in the room. We don't have any information that they knew each other."

Little was known Thursday about Montgomery. Police are unsure why he was staying in Norcross, but suspected "he'd been here for some time," Harr said.

Harr said investigators are interviewing hotel patrons two or three times, combing for more details.

"A lot of times at hotels, you have people that were walking around," he said. "Even something insignificant to them could mean a lot to us."

The killing marks the third murder in the city limits of Norcross this year, Harr said.

Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to call the Norcross Police Department at 770-448-2111.
