School media centers named 'exemplary' by state DOE

Three media programs that provide Gwinnett County Public Schools students and teachers with information resources have been named "Exemplary Media Centers" by the Georgia Department of Education.

The media centers and media specialists at Meadowcreek Elementary, Mill Creek High and North Gwinnett High were recognized and presented with the award during a recent Georgia Board of Education meeting.

"We are proud of all the GCPS media programs and the support they provide for teachers and students. To have three schools recognized for their exemplary media program is an honor for Gwinnett County Public Schools," said Faye Curlee, director of media services and technology training.

"GCPS media centers are the largest classrooms in the school, the center of instructional support and informational service for each school," Curlee added. "Media specialists plan and collaborate with teachers to identify, select and provide the best resources and activities to support student achievement. Students and teachers who become proficient in locating, evaluating, organizing and presenting information become effective users of information throughout their years in school and on into adulthood."

The three media centers were selected based on the roles they play in helping the school meet school improvement goals and improve student achievement. These schools excelled in the following categories: student achievement and instruction, staffing, facilities, access and resources, administrative support, staff development and technology integration. The honorees were selected by peer media specialists from around the state, as well as Department of Education staff members.

The Georgia Department of Education Exemplary Library Media Program began in 2002. Gwinnett's Creekland Middle was recognized in 2003.
