Two semi incidents tangle I-85

BUFORD - A semi trailer carrying medical supplies tumbled on Interstate 85 as part of a seven-vehicle wreck that tangled the roadway for hours late Thursday.

Two semis and five passenger cars were involved in the 9:42 p.m. pileup in the northbound lanes of I-85 north of Hamilton Mill Road in Buford.

Two passengers in the cars were injured and both were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center. Neither of the injuries were considered life-threatening, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

One semi tipped on its side, spilling about 125 gallons of diesel fuel from a ruptured tank, he said.

"The fuel has been contained and does not pose any environmental hazard at this time," Rutledge said.

The crash closed both I-85 lanes near the Spout Springs Road bridge for about two hours.

Rutledge was unable to provide an update on the victims' conditions Friday due to federal patient privacy laws, he said.

In an unrelated incident Thursday night, a semi transporting vehicles burst into flames in the southbound lanes of I-85 near Indian Trail Road.

The 11:30 p.m. fire scorched the semi and five vehicles on board, but no injuries were reported, said Rutledge.

The cause of that fire was also under investigation Friday.
