Peachtree Corners club hosting youth triathlon

NORCROSS - For the third consecutive year, the Peachtree Corners Swim and Racquet Club will host Kids Triathlon today, a USA Triathlon-certified endurance challenge for children ages 7 to 15.

Area youth, divided up by age, will compete in swimming, biking and running. The junior event - for children ages 7 to 10 - features a 100-yard swim, a 2.8-mile bike and a 0.6-mile run. The senior challenge - for ages 11 to 15 - has a 200-yard swim, a 5.6-mile bike and a 1.2-mile run.

David Wallace, a tri-athlete, created the neighborhood triathlon two years ago. He said the event has exceeded expectations and has created quite the buzz.

"Youth triathlon is a great way to introduce kids to the fun of swimming, biking and running, with a race that is just for kids," Wallace said. "After my own children did the Iron Kids Triathlon in 2005, I felt that we could put on a similar race right in our Peachtree Corners neighborhood to make it easy for area families to be able to experience the fun of triathlons on a safe course in a low-key kids' race."

The course is as follows:

Swim - Peachtree Corners Swim & Racquet Club pool

Transition area - PCS&R Club parking lot

Bike - 1.4-mile loop on Jones Bridge Circle & Fitzpatrick Way

Run - Jones Bridge Circle into Simpsonwood Retreat Center and back

Finish - Revington pool parking lot

Simpsonwood United Methodist church will provide parking.
