4 dead in crash while fleeing Gustav
TEMPLE - Four people fleeing Hurricane Gustav are dead after a car crash on Interstate 20 in west Georgia and two others were seriously injured.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Larry Schnall said the car veered from the roadway about 10 p.m. Sunday night and struck a tree. He said the car's driver may have fallen asleep.
The car was carrying six passengers from Marrero, La., a suburb just south of New Orleans. The victims were identified as 27-year-old Derek Bryant, 33-year-old Lynika Kennard, 2-year-old Derk Kennard and 45-year-old Gyrone Hudson.
Schnall said the two survivors - 45-year-old Tyrone Hudson and 16-year-old Johnika Batiste - were seriously injured.
Ga. teen drowns while fishing with father in creek
GAINESVILLE - Authorities said a teenager drowned while fishing with his father along a north Georgia creek.
Col. Jeff Strickland with the Hall County sheriff's department said 18-year-old Zach Campa of Suwanee and his father were fishing Sunday afternoon in different areas when the teen slipped on rocks, hit his head and fell into the water. His father, Martin Campa, found him in the creek.
Rescue workers were unable to resuscitate the teen, who was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the pair was fishing on the property of Eagle Boys Ranch, a children's home in south Hall County.
Girl hit by armored truck dies
STONE MOUNTAIN - A middle school student who was hit by an armored truck while boarding a school bus has died.
DeKalb County police spokesman Marcus Hodge said Olivia Hayes, a student at Tucker Middle School, died Monday after five days at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Officials were unsure of her age.
Hodge said charges have not been filed yet against the driver of the armored vehicle, identified as 49-year-old Brian Gaines of Snellville.
Police said the school bus was stopped last Wednesday morning with lights flashing to pick up Olivia. The truck driver tried to stop but slid into the bus and the girl. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's office was expected to complete any autopsy by today.
Mother, 2 kids killed in Union City
UNION CITY - A deadly wreck in Union City claimed the lives of a mother and her two daughters. A third daughter was critically injured in Saturday's accident.
Union City Police spokesman George Louth said two vehicles collided Saturday afternoon near the intersection of South Fulton Parkway and Mason Road.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as 36-year-old Tanya Greer and her two children, 5-year-old Keyonna and 12-year-old Cherokee Greer.
16-year-old Maria Greer was listed in critical condition.
The accident remains under investigation.
