Shannon Abney Butler, 43, of 1014 Mt. Water Lane, Lawrenceville, GA, died at her home on Sunday, August 31, 2008 after an illness with breast cancer. Mrs. Butler was a devout Christian and a dedicated member of Passion Church of Metro Atlanta in Lawrenceville. She was born in Athens, Ga in 1965 and grew up in Augusta, Ga where she attended elementary and middle school and graduated from West Side High School in 1983. Shannon attended The Art Institute of Atlanta where she graduated in 1986 with a degree in Fashion Design. She later attended and graduated in 1990 from Gwinnett Technical College with a degree in Cosmetology. Shannon also earned a BA degree in Theology from Vision International, Christian City Church, Lawrenceville. Mrs. Butler was employed with Michel's Beauty Salon in Suwanee, Ga. She was a gifted artist and continued to paint throughout her adult life. Shannon is preceded in death by her infant twin brother and sister who died in 1966 and her mother, Jackie Dempsey Abney, who passed away in 1975. Mrs. Butler is survived by her husband, Stephen Butler and daughter, Hannah Butler both of Lawrenceville, and her father and step-mother, Tom and Jeanie Abney of Augusta, Ga. Other extended family members include father-in-law, James Butler of Cumming, Ga, mother-in-law and step-father-in-law, Lois and Jay Maxwell of Loganville, sisters-in-law and husbands, Stephanie and James Eason of Loganville, Ga and Amy and Rob McCrae of Woodstock, Ga, aunts and uncles, Joyann and Ted Lindsey of Valdosta, Ga, Bill and Jan Abney of Tifton, Ga, Evelyn and Wallace NeSmith of Enigma, Ga and cousins, Karla McElroy of Lawrenceville, Ga, Marla Harvey of Duluth, Ga, Tony Lindsey of Fitzgerald, Ga, Sandy NeSmith of Aiken, SC, Michael Abney of Athens, Ga and Nicholas Abney of Statesboro, Ga. Visitation will be held at Flanigan Funeral Home, 4400 S. Lee Street, Buford, Ga on Tuesday, September 2, 12 N until 2:00 PM and 7:00 until 9:00 PM. The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 1:00 PM in the chapel at the same location. A second visitation in planned in the Enigma United Methodist Church, Enigma, Ga on Thursday, September 4 from 12 N until 2:00 PM followed by a graveside service at the Enigma City Cemetery. Pastor Charlton Groover of Passion Church will officiate at both the funeral service in Buford and the graveside service in Enigma.
