Cotton States Cat Club hosts 70th annual show

Pebbles - short for Samberkat Pebble Beach - is a red classic tabby cat with white paws that, upon first glance, might appear to be a typical, friendly house cat. This weekend, though, Pebbles will shift into champion show cat mode as she competes for the title of grand champion in Cotton States Cat Club's 70th annual CFA Championship and Household Pet Show.

The 11-month-old Maine Coon is one of Lilburn resident Stevie Stacy's decorated show cats and will be up against 200 other champion felines at this weekend's show, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Gwinnett Civic Center.

In preparation for this weekend's competition, Pebbles will receive what Stacy called a "show bath," which takes about an hour and a half, and she will then be powdered Saturday to make sure her coat is in excellent condition. Pebbles has the luxury of being prepped and pampered in a custom kitty shower and grooming station in Stacy's basement.

"(Pebbles has) been in quite a few shows, so she knows what's going on," Stacy said.

At the show, Pebbles will be evaluated by eight judges on her body shape and muzzle shape, her ear set, eye shape, set and color, her coat and her profile.

"It's a beauty contest," Stacy said. "It's all about how (the cats) look and how their condition is."

In addition to the lovely Pebbles, 400 other cats and kittens are expected to attend this weekend's show, which includes an agility portion and a costume contest for the most fashionable felines.

"If people have not been to a cat show before, they will be spoiled at Cotton States," Stacy said. "It's a top notch show."
