Joe Harvey Payne, 65, of the Laurel Branch Community went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 21, 2008 in Swain County Hospital. A native of Swain County, he lived in Lawrenceville, GA for over 30 years before moving back to Swain County in 1999. He was the son of the late Grady and Lillian Howard Payne. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Vietnam War. He was a retired employee with Bell South where he worked for 30 years. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Ernie and Harold Payne. He is survived by: His wife of 45 years; Margaret Walsh Payne, 2 sons; Scott Payne and wife Mandy of Bryson City, Mark Payne and wife Elizabeth of Salt Lake City, Utah, 4 grandchildren; Kayla, Chase, Tyler, and Lucas, One brother; Clifford Payne and wife Maxine of Bryson City, 2 sisters; Allene Williamson of Bryson City, Shirley Hyde and husband Stub of Winston Salem, NC, 2 sisters-in-law; Celia Payne of Memphis, TN, and Barbara Payne of Candler, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church of which he was a member and deacon. Rev. Peter Mudge will officiate with burial in Laurel Branch Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by the Bryson City VFW Post 9281. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Crisp Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The pallbearers will be the nephews.
