LAWRENCEVILLE - A Central Gwinnett High School student faces criminal charges after officials found he brought a loaded pistol to school, a police report states.

The student, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, was taken to the office the morning of Sept. 30 after an administrator noticed he was wearing gang colors. A search of the student revealed he was carrying a .22-caliber pistol loaded with five rounds and "rolled coins ... taped together for use as a weapon," the report states.

The dress code violation was noticed as soon as the student arrived on campus before school started, said Jorge Quintana, spokesman for Gwinnett County Public Schools.

"The administrator took immediate action when he recognized attire that conflicted with campus expectations," Quintana said. "A weapon on campus is something we take very seriously, and the awareness and quick response of administrators de-escalated this situation."

The student, who said he is a member of the Bloods, was also in possession of gang writing, drawings and "a bandanna rolled in the familiar roll for gang members," the police report states.

The student faces a felony charge of possession of a weapon within a school safety zone and a misdemeanor charge of participation in criminal street gang activity. The school is also taking disciplinary action, Quintana said.

Quintana said he could not release the student's age or grade level because the student is a juvenile.
