Star search
Locals to compete in talent contest

LAWRENCEVILLE - The search for local stars will be on Tuesday as Gwinnett performers compete to be the area's most talented acts.

"We've got a couple musicians, someone doing voiceovers, we've got a rapper and we've got some dancers and a magician," said Jayne Madigan, president of JEM Entertainment of Lawrenceville, which is coordinating the competition.

Open to 30 acts - individuals or groups of three - Gwinnett's Most Talented will narrow competitors down to four winners who will move on to compete at the state level next year and will also perform at the televised 11 Alive Holiday Can-A-Thon at Discover Mills Mall in Lawrenceville.

Acts will be judged on performance, stage presence and appearance, and one winner from each age group - ages 6 to 11, 12 to 16 and 17 and older - will be declared judges' choice. An additional winner will be chosen by the audience based on donations.

Registration for the competition is $25 for the first performer and $10 for each additional performer in a group. If spots are still available the night of the competition, a $40 cash-only fee will be accepted for the first performer and $15 for each additional performer.

The competition will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Red Clay Theatre and Arts Center, 3116 Main St., Duluth, and is open to the public. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door, and can be purchased online at www.jem-entertainment.com or by calling 678-283-7178.

Proceeds from Gwinnett's Most Talented will benefit the 11 Alive Holiday Can-A-Thon, and those who attend are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation.
