ATLANTA - Wesleyan swept Blessed Trinity in three games 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 on Thursday to claim the Area 7-AA/A championship, the eighth straight area title for the Wolves.
Anne Marie Armstrong, the tournament MVP, finished with 21 kills and 18 digs. Grace Leah Baughn (12 digs, nine kills) and Maggie Smith (33 assists, six digs) were each named to the All-Tournament team.
Wesleyan (45-7) also received six kills and two digs from Anna Keappler and nine digs, two kills and two aces from Brittany Price. Wesleyan will host the state sectionals next Saturday.
Norcross beats Collins Hill and North
HOSCHTON - Norcross had a perfect opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament on Thursday at Mill Creek with wins over Collins Hill (25-15, 25-18) and North Gwinnett (25-22, 25-19). Norcross will be in the winner's bracket for the semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Mill Creek.
Norcross (29-12) was led by 16 kills and 41/2 blocks from Tiffany Clarke and 26 assists by Rachel Monteagudo. Briana Jordan added 13 digs and 12 kills while Angelica Wilcox finished with nice aces and seven digs.
Mill Creek advances
HOSCHTON - Host Mill Creek had a solid showing in the opening round of the Area 7-AAAAA tournament by posting wins over Meadowcreek (25-2, 25-14) and Duluth (25-11, 25-16) while falling to North Gwinnett (25-20, 19-25, 20-25).
Ashley Jackson had 32 assists for the Hawks (29-14) while Mo Simmons finished with 21 kills and eight blocks. Taylor Alkire served seven aces and Alyson White led the team's defensive effort. Mill Creek will begin play on Saturday at 9 a.m.
North Gwinnett makes it to semis
HOSCHTON - North Gwinnett continued its season by working its way to the Area 7-AAAAA semifinals with two wins and one loss at Mill Creek in the tournament's first round.
North beat Peachtree Ridge (25-16, 23-25, 25-18) and Mill Creek (20-25, 25-19, 25-20) before falling to Norcross (25-22, 25-19).
Megan Carnell had 28 kills for North while Stephanie Wheeler added 19 kills. Alex Panks dished out 40 assists while Michelle Demaris had 28 digs. The semis will be played at Mill Creek on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Parkview reaches semis
DACULA - The Panthers (30-12) posted wins over South Gwinnett (25-9, 25-5) and Central Gwinnett (25-13, 22-25, 25-13) Thursday to reach the winner's bracket semifinals of the Area 8-AAAAA tournament.
Audrey Hipple led the offense with 12 kills and six service aces and added 17 digs, while Amanda France had five blocks and Libby Lukens handed out 22 assists to help Parkview advance to meet host Dacula at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Dacula to play in semis
DACULA - Dacula reached the winner's bracket semifinals of the Area 8-AAAAA tournament with wins over Shiloh and Brookwood on Thursday. The semifinals will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Dacula.
Dacula's first match against Shiloh was decided by forfeit. The Falcons (23-9) then faced Brookwood and beat the Broncos in three games 14-25, 25-14, 25-17.
Courtney Weider led Dacula with 17 digs while Roselande Corneille had 17 assists. Courtney Williams (eight kills, two blocks) and Sara Beth White (eight kills) each had solid games.
Central secures spot in semis
DACULA - Central Gwinnett closed out its day with a 25-14, 22-25, 25-23 win over Shiloh to earn a spot in the area 8-AAAAA semifinals in the tournament's opening round on Thursday at Dacula.
Central's day began with a 7-25, 25-23, 25-15 win over Grayson before falling to Parkview in three games 25-13, 25-22, 25-13. Semifinal play begins on Satrday at 10 a.m. at Dacula.
GAC advances to finals
LILBURN - Greater Atlanta Christian topped Decatur in two games 25-19, 25-17 on Thursday to advance to the Area 4-AA/A finals at Providence.
GAC (19-12) will host the finals on Saturday at 10 a.m. and will play Decatur, who earned the rematch by fighting its way through the loser's bracket with a win over Providence.
Amanda Komisarow, who was named Area 4-AA/A Player of the Year, had nine kills while Catherine Chason finished with eight digs and six kills. Brynn Massey delivered 18 assists while Katie Stevens served three aces.
Providence's long day ends with the No. 3 seed
LILBURN - Providence went 2-1 on Thursday in the Area 4-AA/A tournament and will enter next week's state sectionals as the No. 3 seed.
Providence opened the day with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-13 win over Hebron and advanced to sweep Buford 25-13, 25-16. In the semifinals, the Stars (17-17) fell to Decatur 25-12, 25-13.
Caroline Adams played well at middle hitter for Providence while Melanie Blackburn, Lindsay Meredith and Maggie Brown helped with the team effort.
Hebron (16-23) concluded its season with the loss to Providence. Courtney Bishop led Hebron with eight kills while Elise Murray added four kills and two blocks. Sarah Hedrick finished with four kills and three aces while Maddie Roof and Jenny Conner each had five assists.
Buford grabs No. 4 seed
LILBURN - The Wolves (17-18) claimed the No. 4 seed from Area 4-AA/A in next week's state sectionals by splitting a pair of matches Thursday at the area tournament at Providence.
Buford defeated Paideia 25-21, 25-22 before falling to the host Stars 25-13, 25-16.
Leticia Lins dished out 11 assists, while Elizabeth Darden had 15 digs and Hallye Jerkins finished with 12 kills.
