Wesleyan 38, Prince Avenue 0

NORCROSS - Wesleyan accomplished everything it wanted Friday night with a 38-0 win over Prince Avenue.

The offense improved, the defense pitched a shutout and with the win the Wolves clinched a playoff spot in Region 8-A.

"We can run the ball well and we're going to continue to improve and move forward in our passing game," said Wesleyan coach Franklin Pridgen. "We've got to be more balanced and continue to cut down on some of our execution errors. But I really like where we are right now."

It didn't take long for Wesleyan (5-2, 3-0) to put the game out of reach - exactly three plays, in fact. Kyle Karempelis busted a 42-yard run for the game's opening score to put Wesleyan up 7-0.

The touchdown began what would be a 156-yard, four-touchdown night for Karempelis.

After being forced to punt on its second possession, Wesleyan capped a seven-play drive, with a 2-yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper by Conor Welton.

Karempelis continued his scoring onslaught with a 1-yard touchdown run. By the end of the first half, the sophomore had tallied 98 of the Wolves 112 yards of offense, including two scores.

On the other side of the ball, Wesleyan's defense was matching the offense step for step. It kept the Wolverines to a measly 41 yards of total offense and well away from crossing midfield. By the end of the night, Prince Avenue had compiled only 81 yards of offense.

"We take a lot of pride in how we play at the line of scrimmage on both sides," said Pridgen. "I'm always proud of our defense. I think that they are motivated and they are excited."

Karempelis found the end zone twice more in the third quarter on runs of 10 and 27 yards.

After the starting offense had given way to the younger class, Spencer Short was called on to kick a 36-yard field goal after the Wolves' drive stalled on the 19.

"We just clinched a playoff spot and that means something - that this group is shooting for higher goals," said Pridgen. "Our kids are playing with a confidence that we haven't see around here for a long time and it shows."
