Man shoots at officer, flees

NORCROSS - A man who fired several shots at a Gwinnett police officer Monday night remains at large, officials said.

The officer, who was not identified, is a member of the Gwinnett County Police Crime Suppression Unit. No injuries were reported.

Police encountered the suspect, described only as a black male, after they'd received complaints of illegal activity at the America's Best Inn near Norcross about 9 p.m.

Several officers conducted surveillance at the motel, located on Oakbrook Parkway near Jimmy Carter Boulevard, and witnessed from a distance someone shoot at another person, police said.

The shooter fled in a black Chevy Blazer driven by another black male. When the officer tried to confront the suspects near the motel exit, the passenger fired several shots in the officer's direction, police said.

Other police in the area gave chase but lost track of the Blazer when it veered off surface streets. Police located the vehicle moments later a couple miles away at the Victory Trail apartments on South Norcross-Tucker Road, sans the shooter and driver, police said.

"Officers conducted an extensive ground search in the area, but were unsuccessful in locating the suspects," said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.

Police don't believe the initial shooting resulted in any injuries, either. Witnesses said the original victim fled the scene after shots rang out.

Police didn't specify what illegal activity initially attracted officers to the motel.

"That area has been known for drug transaction, prostitution," Schiralli said.

Police transported the Blazer to headquarters, where it was examined for evidence, Schiralli said. The investigation continues.

Police urge anyone with information to contact the Gwinnett County Police Department at 770-513-5100.
