NORCROSS - Art will abound at the 2008 Norcross Art Fest this weekend.
Artists from California, New Mexico, Mississippi and around the southeast will line the historic streets of downtown Norcross for the fifth annual invitation-only juried art show presenting pieces in clay, fiber, folk art, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paintings, photography and wood.
"To me, Norcross Art Fest is the show with personality," director Frances Schube said. "Because we have such whimsical, funky, colorful art and artists from all over the country, it just makes this show so much more fun to come to."
The event will be held from 10 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
"We want a midtown show in the Northern suburbs and that's what we think we have achieved with the Norcross Art Fest," Schube said.
While art is the main focus of the event, live music will complement the juried show.
"The best part of the music is that our mayor, Bucky Johnson, once again returns as the chair of the entertainment committee," Schube said. A former music director for Georgia Tech, Johnson selected this year's music lineup.
"We have jazz and blues, and we have big band and we have pop," Schube said.
Festival-goers can also unwind after the event to the tunes of local band Skin Alley Cats, which will play from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Kids are also welcome at the event and can take part in, making arts and crafts, from bookmarks to Halloween goodies, at a free art pavilion in Thrasher Park, and creating a free snack with Young Chef's Academy.
Youngsters can also enjoy face painting, sand art, an inflatable zoo, moonwalks, train rides, a rock-climbing wall and more.
The event, which is staffed by more than 200 volunteers, is set to include giveaways, tastings and free prizes, and all proceeds from Norcross Art Fest are distributed to charitable and community projects.
Free parking is available at lots on Holcomb Bridge Road at the corner of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, and free shuttles will run regularly between the downtown area and those lots.
