Wesleyan's Schamp scores 29 in loss

LILBURN - Howard Thompkins is now a Georgia Bulldog, but Wesleyan still has one of the leading boys scorers in Gwinnett County.

At least for the first week of the season.

Griffin Schamp, who played sparingly as a sophomore last season, scored 84 points in three games at the Parkview Tip-Off Classic - an average of 28 points per game.

That's what Thompkins averaged last season in leading Wesleyan to the Class AA state title.

All five starters graduated from that team, leaving the Wolves with a rebuilding job, but Schamp has certainly picked up the scoring slack. He had 29 points for the second time in the tournament as Wesleyan gave Sandy Creek a battle before losing 64-53 in the third-place game Tuesday night.

Greater Atlanta Christians' Trent Wiedeman also scored 84 points in the tournament and joined Schamp on the all-tournament team. The 6-foot-6 junior scored 28 as GAC took fifth place with a 61-54 victory over Tri-Cities. Elliott Long had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (3-1).

Miller Grove, ranked No. 3 in Class AAAA in the GaSports.com/GACA preseason poll, won the Tip-Off Classic boys championship with a 74-60 victory over Loganville.

Down 38-21 at halftime, Loganville (2-1) cut the lead to three points midway in the fourth quarter before Miller Grove (3-0) recovered. Georgia Tech signee Mfon Udofi scored 42 points and was named the MVP of the tournament.

Schamp, a 6-foot-3 workhorse, had 29 points, including the winning shot at the buzzer, in the first round and 26 on Monday. The only flaw in Schamp's game against Sandy Creek was his foul shooting. He was just 5-for-11.

Wesleyan (1-2) was down by just a point midway in the fourth quarter, but Sandy Creek (1-2) then pulled away behind the hot shooting of Malcolm Jackson and Asa Caruther.

Jackson, who had scored 40 in an opening-round victory over Greater Atlanta Christian, finished with 22 points and Caruther had 13.

Wesleyan got a lift from 6-foot-9 freshman Ryon Riggins. Playing his first game, Riggins scored 12 points.

Sandy Creek led 20-13 after the first quarter, but Wesleyan led 29-27 at halftime as Schamp had 18 points. Sandy Creek was up 45-44 going into the final quarter.
