Youth Rounudup: North Gwinnett wins regional crown

The North Gwinnett Ice Dogs defeated a team from Greenville, South Carolina to win the Southern Regional championship of the International Silver Stick Inc. ice hockey tournament held in Huntsville, Ala., earlier this month.

The North Gwinnett high school team competed in the Midget 18-and-under B division, defeating the Kennesaw Junior Thrashers, Huntsville Selects and Greenville Grizzlies teams to earn the tournament championship title. This is the first time a Georgia Student Hockey League team has won the championship. Cody Ballas, a junior at North Gwinnett and the team's goalie, was named the tournament's most valuable player.

The Ice Dogs are now eligible to compete in the Silver Sticks Championship Finals, which will be held in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada on Jan. 16.


Collins Hill wins Boo Ball tournament

The Collins Hill 10U travel baseball team won the sixth annual South Gwinnett Boo Ball held Oct. 26 at E.R. Snell Park in Snellville.

After going 1-1 in pool play, the Eagles were 3-0 to win the championship. Collins Hill trailed Duluth 4-0 in the second inning before rallying. The Eagles sent 19 batters to the plate and scored 15 runs to win the game 17-5.

The Eagles finished the season 19-8-2, winning three of the four tournaments they competed in this season.

Team members are Tristan Alvarado, Blake Casto, James Civelli, Mark Flores, Cade Heil, Austin Jett, Bradley Kallgren, Thomas Nadal, Oscar Serrato, Nicholas Topoleski and Jon Wyatt. The team is coached by Ted Kallgren, Tony Flores, Jason Heil and Tom Topoleski.

Mill Creek wins Triple Crown title

The Mill Creek Hawks 11U travel baseball team won the 2008 Triple Crown Georgia Fall State Championship on Oct. 26 in Marietta. The Hawks defeated the East Cobb Stars 9-6 to win the championship.

The Hawks scored a tournament-leading 44 runs and hit four home runs on their way to capture the crown.

Team members are Gabe Davenport, Austin Elliott, Jonathan Gettys, Matthew Lewis, Loren Matzick, Justin Reppert, Jacob Weisenberger, Kobe Wharton, Brett Whitford and Tyler Zak. The team is coached by Rod Davenport, Doug Lewis, John Reppert and Keith Elliott.

Stix capture Triple Play championship

The Suwanee Stix 11U travel baseball team recently won the Triple Play Classic tournament in Simpsonville, S.C., on Oct. 12.

The team went 4-0, outscoring their opponents 54-5 and taking the championship 15-0 over the Carolina Sliders.

Team coaches and members are Riley Burns, J.P. Baselj, Trevor Austin, Blair Redmond, Sammy Strausser, Matt Hausser, Nahmkuhn Kim, Kyle Shumeyko, Timothy Chun, Connor Darling, Tanner Hanes, Taylor Mills, David Darling, Neil Burns, Dave Hanes and Mike Hausser.
