NORCROSS - A Gwinnett police officer shot and injured a robbery suspect who pulled a gun Saturday night near Norcross, an official said.
Police said Norcross resident Hakeem Smith, 29, made "an aggressive movement" with a weapon he was carrying, prompting the officer to shoot him about 11 p.m. outside an apartment in the 6300 block of McEachern Way. Smith received minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said. He remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond, charged with two counts of aggravated assault, Schiralli said. Witnesses who called police to the scene reported seeing Smith enter the apartment carrying a handgun. When officers arrived, Smith was leaving the apartment and refused to drop the gun as police ordered him to do, Schiralli said. The officer who shot Smith, a two-year veteran of the force, was not identified. The officer remains on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, Schiralli said. It was unclear Monday if Smith had robbed anyone or committed other crimes in the area before he was shot, Schiralli said. No other injuries were reported.More like this story
