WINDER - Authorities are investigating what they believe is a homicide after a badly decomposed body was found Sunday in Barrow County.
Barrow County Sheriff's Maj. Murray Kogod said two people walking through a wooded area alerted deputies after finding the body at about 5 p.m. behind an abandoned home at 998 Atlanta Highway, between the Northeast Georgia Regional Airport and the city of Statham. "Deputies responded to the scene and secured the scene, but because it was dark, held the scene until daylight broke to ensure a thorough search could be conducted and the scene processed properly," Kogod said. Barrow County authorities, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, worked the scene early Monday morning, Kogod said, and the body was sent to the GBI crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy. Few details are available about the body, Kogod said, because "decomposition was too far along." Investigators were unable to determine even the sex, but there were signs at the scene that indicate foul play. "We do not have the body identified at this time," Kogod said. "We are hoping information from the autopsy will lead us in a direction where we can do that." Authorities are also hoping to receive help from the public. "If anyone believes they have any information relevant to this - if someone's gone missing or something - we ask them to contact the criminal investigations division at 770-307-3083."More like this story
