Two men indicted in bowling alley shooting

LAWRENCEVILLE - Indictments were handed down Thursday against two men allegedly involved in the Brunswick Zone parking lot shooting police believe was a botched drug deal.

Benjamin Lamar Adams of Clarkston and Leroy Antwon Backman of Lawrenceville have been in custody since the Aug. 13 incident in which Backman is accused of shooting Dexter Springer. Springer was treated at Gwinnett Medical Center, but has since been released, said spokeswoman Andrea Wehrmann.

Adams is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault upon a peace officer. Backman is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Both men are being held in the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond.

Authorities said Backman shot Springer about 4 p.m. inside a Chevrolet Impala during a drug deal behind the Lawrenceville Highway bowling alley and pushed him out of the car. Backman and Adams, reports said, then sped out of the lot, heading south on Lawrenceville Highway.

An off-duty Newman police officer followed Backman and Adams after witnessing Simpson being thrown from the vehicle, reports said, calling the incident in to local authorities.

Police said after he dropped Backman off at a nearby Wal-Mart, Adams tried to run over Lilburn police officer Kim Banks near the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway and Beaver Ruin Road. Banks reportedly fired at the vehicle, striking it, before Adams continued southbound.

Police said Adams crashed the Impala into a concrete median at the corner of Rockbridge Road and Five Forks Trickum Road and was caught after a brief foot chase. Backman was arrested at the Wal-Mart.
