Lawrenceville woman indicted in husband's slaying

LAWRENCEVILLE - A 53-year-old Lawrenceville woman was indicted this week on charges she ended a turbulent relationship with her husband by fatally shooting him in the head.

Evelyn Fields-Earls faces charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to a two-count indictment released Thursday. Authorities allege she fired the single shot that killed her husband, Gary David Earls, 55, in the couple's Amelia Court home the night of Aug. 13.

Fields-Earls remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond. Her arraignment, during which she could enter a plea, is expected within a month.

Police said Earls' daughter found his body in the home and called 911. A witness had seen his wife fleeing the home on foot, and police apprehended her in the area shortly after, authorities have said.

Police described the couple's relationship as notoriously rocky. They had filed a joint restraining order against each other May 28, but Fields had apparently let his wife back under his roof.

Earls had filed for divorce from his wife twice - in March 2007 and again in April this year - but neither action was finalized.

In a protective order filed in Gwinnett Magistrate Court, Fields-Earls claimed her husband was abusive and adulterous, noting as many as 13 violent episodes between them.

Earls, in his own paperwork, warned authorities earlier this year that a domestic tragedy could be imminent.
