Mrs. Athalena Samples Smith, age 88, of Buford, GA passed away on November 3, 2008. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buford. She was a ward secretary at Buford Manor Nursing Home from 1980 to 1985. She was office secretary at the Lumite Plant during the mid and late 1970s and also office secretary at the Buford Tannery in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Athalena attended Lanier Area Technical School, at age 50, in 1970 and successfully received her GED or high school equivalency. At Lanier Area Tech, she got successful certificates of training in typing and IBM Keypunch. She attended Gwinnett-Buford Community College in 1982 and received a certificate for Apple Plus Microcomputer. A native of Cumming in Forsyth County, Athelena moved to Buford in 1940 and spent the rest of her life as a Buford resident; until moving to Willow Wood Nursing Home in Flowery Branch in 2003 and until her death in 2008. Athelena loved her Buford friends and was devoted to her family. She enjoyed her rose garden, the Atlanta Braves baseball team, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Silvie and Mintie Pirkle Samples. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Maxine Smith Little, Buford, GA and Cheri and Dr. James Davis, Buford, GA; son, Harold Smith, Flowery Branch, GA; grandchildren, Susan Leigh Wallace, Buford, GA and Smith Nolan Wallace, Buford, GA; sister, Ruth Green, Cumming, GA; brother, Ivan Samples, Gainesville, GA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. Gerry M. Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens, Buford, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Arrangements by: Junior E.
