Chairman Charles Bannister picked up a major endorsement this week from Gwinnett's popular Congressman John Linder.
Bannister, seeking a second term as the top elected official in county government, said the endorsement is a major boost to his campaign.
"He has a huge following in Gwinnett," Bannister said of Linder, who is serving his eighth term as a U.S. representative. "It could mean, should mean his folks know where he is coming from. ... It means a lot to my campaign."
The politicians, both Republicans, have had a long working relationship, since Bannister's days in the Georgia General Assembly.
"I am proud to endorse my good friend Charles Bannister for his reelection as Chairman of the Gwinnett County Commission. Chairman Bannister has been a leader in Gwinnett County for many years and has a long and distinguished history of public service," Linder said in a press release.
"As his first term as Chairman comes to a close, it is clear that he has contributed to the betterment of Gwinnett County," Linder said. "Charles has represented the citizens of Gwinnett with vision, character, and integrity for the past four years, and I look forward to that same kind of leadership for the next four years."
Bannister said it's good to have such an influential politician on his side.
"I am humbled by the endorsement and support of Congressman John Linder," the former Lilburn mayor said. "I know that the congressman is as committed to the future of Gwinnett County as I am. I look forward to working with as we continue to work for the families of Gwinnett County."
Lorraine Green, the county commissioner who is challenging Bannister in the Republican primary, did not return a phone message seeking comment Wednesday. Also on the July GOP ballot is Buford man Glenn Pirkle.
Members of the public can hear from the chairman candidates, as well as those seeking commission seats for Districts 1 and 3, during a forum tonight.
