Gwinnett Tech to offer courses at mall

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett Technical College will soon expand its high-demand language and business services training courses from the college's main campus into the community.

In October, the college will begin offering Continuing Education Division courses in new classroom space at Gwinnett Place Mall. The division will open in mid-September in 32,600 square feet of space in the Duluth mall.

"With continued and significant growth at our main campus, we've been looking for ways to best increase capacity and serve more people," Gwinnett Tech President Sharon Rigsby Bartels said in a news release. "Taking these Continuing Education courses into the community where residents can benefit supports our mission on two fronts - improving access to education for all who desire it and supporting economic development in the communities we serve."

Courses to be taught at the school's Gwinnett Place Mall location will include English as a second language, Serve Safe, OSHA safety training (in English and Spanish), General industry and construction courses, real estate, starting and owning your own business, supervisory skills and master electrician training.

In anticipation of this fall expansion, Gwinnett Tech will shift ESL classes from the English Language Institute at 1800 MacLeod Drive in Lawrenceville back to the main campus for the summer quarter. This change will be effective June 30.

For the fall quarter, the college will partner with Gwinnett County Public Schools to offer ESL classes at two high schools, including Norcross High School. The other location will soon be finalized, according to a news release. Additional ESL classes will be offered at several churches.

Gwinnett Tech has one of the state's largest Continuing Education Divisions, recording an enrollment increase of 85 percent last year. Additionally, the school increased the number of Continuing Education ESL courses offered by 100 percent and recorded a 55 percent increase in ESL students.
