Barrow commission to hear request for personal care home

WINDER - Barrow County's baby boomers are aging and they need a personal care home nearby, according to Joy Murray. She owns Fam Personal Care Home in Loganville and wants to open a similar location at 294 Tanners Bridge Road near Bethlehem.

Barrow County's Board of Commissioners will vote on the request in Tuesday's meeting.

If approved, Murray will open the home on 1 acre surrounded by wooded areas, some residential homes and Noah's Landing subdivision to the east. Development codes restrict the number of patients to six. The planning commission recommends approval of the special-use permit required for opening.

Requested rezoning could lose agricultural land

A requested rezoning could convert 2.4 Barrow County acres from agricultural use to residential.

As growth moves north and east from Gwinnett, a steady stream of Barrow landowners have converted their properties from agricultural uses to some other classification, usually residential or commercial. A total of 513 agricultural acres were rezoned in 2007.

Tuesday, the Board of Commissioners will consider whether to rezone 2.4 acres at 1255 Foster Road near Statham from agricultural residential to residential. The owner, Debra Fulcher, intends to split the acreage into two fairly equal tracts. Two mobile homes now occupy the acreage.

The property is surrounded by woods and residential homes. The Planning Commission recommends approval of the rezoning.
