Wreck that killed boy, 5, also injures sister, cousin

LAWRENCEVILLE - A child killed in a single-car wreck on Lawrenceville Highway that injured two other passengers Thursday has been identified as 5-year-old Maahir Bhai, police say.

Bhai was riding in a gold Toyota Camry with his sister, Sabrina Bhai, 9, and cousin Sarfaraz S. Maknojia, 25, of Austin, Texas, when the car allegedly left the road for an unknown reason and flipped several times, ejecting and killing the boy, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said.

Maknojia, the driver of the vehicle, and Sabrina Bhai - also ejected from the car - received non-life threatening injuries and are expected to recover, Spellman said.

No one was wearing seat belts at the time of the incident and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

"Further investigation will determine if criminal charges are forthcoming," Spellman said in a release.

The incident occurred about 2 p.m. in clear conditions in the 3300 block of Lawrenceville Highway. The Camry, which was traveling southbound, appeared to be destroyed. The entire roof of the vehicle was ripped off and the front end sustained extensive damage.
