ZAGREB, Croatia - Former Georgia Tech basketball player Tony Akins tested positive for marijuana and was suspended for one year by the Croatian basketball federation.
Akins, who graduated from Berkmar High School in 1998 and played at Georgia Tech from 1999-2002, said he is innocent and asked that his B sample be analyzed. 'It is strange that the test turned out positive,' he said. 'I know I'm clean.' The 27-year-old guard was tested by the World Anti-Doping Agency after playing for his club team Split on May 3. He was suspended until May 20, 2009, and fined $4,300. The Croatian federation will pass on its decision to basketball's world governing body. Akins was the Daily Post's Player of the Year in 1998 after leading Berkmar to the Class AAAA finals. His 1,955-career points were the second most in Gwinnett County history, but now rank fifth all-time. A four-year starter at Georgia Tech, Akins led the Yellow Jackets in scoring his junior and senior years. He finished with 1,658 career points, 11th best in school history and fourth in assists with 560. After not being drafted in the NBA in 2002, Akins has spent the last six seasons playing overseas. He's played in Russia, China, France, Dominican Republic, Turkey and Poland.
