DACULA - Kids can spend their first day of summer freedom enjoying the county's newest park.
An official grand opening ceremony for Duncan Creek Park, located at Braselton Highway and Pine Road, will be held June 14, but officials plan to open the park to the public today.
"It's not totally completed, but because school's out beginning (today), we thought, 'Why not go ahead and open it up?'" Community Services Director Phil Hoskins said.
The 110-acre park contains the largest skate park for teens in the county with several bowls designed for bicyclists as well as skateboarders and rollerbladers, Hoskins said. The $7.9 million park also contains a football field, basketball and sand volleyball courts and a playground with amenities for children with special needs.
Later this year, officials expect to begin construction of the Hamilton Mill library branch at the park's entrance. Hoskins said the 20,000-square-foot library will be the first in the county designed to meet environmental standards.
