Perdue signs budget, boosting state salaries

ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue on Wednesday approved a $21.1 billion budget that boosts salaries for state employees and funnels money into new reservoirs for the drought-stricken state.

Perdue also signed dozens of bills on what is his final day to consider legislation passed this session, including one that critics say could boost auto insurance rates in the state.

Seventeen bills were vetoed, down from the 41 he rejected last year.

Gov. signs bill pushing for border change

ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue gave Georgia a new tool in its quixotic bid to move the state's northern boundary just far enough north to tap into the Tennessee River.

Perdue signed a measure Wednesday empowering Georgia's top attorney to sue to correct a flawed 1818 survey that mistakenly placed the state's northern line just short of the Tennessee River.

Tennessee lawmakers have reacted with a mix of scorn and humor to Georgia's drought-inspired, long-shot bid. The Chattanooga mayor went so far as to dispatch a truckload of bottled water to lawmakers at the Georgia Capitol, delivered by an aide in Davy Crockett buckskins.
