School scrap lands 3 in jail

BUFORD - A female Mill Creek High School student used a box cutter to slice a male student after he spit on her, landing them both in jail this week, an official said.

Amber Lynn Menniefee, 17, is charged with possession of a weapon on school property and aggravated assault, both felonies, for cutting Shariff Omar Richardson, 19, a school official said.

Richardson is charged with simple battery and disruption of a public school for allegedly spitting and grabbing the girl.

The fight happened as the school's first class bell rang Monday morning. The two argued over a situation that occurred outside school last weekend. Richardson "apparently had a mouthful of liquid and spit that in (Menniefee's) face" before he proceeded to grab her, said Gwinnett Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach.

"At that point, she retaliated by cutting him in the facial area with this box cutter," Roach said.

The strike left "minor scratches" to Richardson's face and neck, according to Menniefee's arrest warrant. He was not transported for hospital treatment, said Roach, who called his injuries "superficial."

As administrators broke up the fight and began investigating, a second female student took the box-cutter and tried to hide it, Roach said. That girl, also 17, was arrested. Roach was unable to provide her name late Wednesday.

Menniefee posted $8,450 bond and was released from the Gwinnett County Jail on Monday.

Richardson, who was arrested the following day, remained in jail late Wednesday on $5,150 bond.

All three students face disciplinary action at the school, Roach said. Officials were uncertain how Menniefee obtained the box cutter.

"Obviously, anything that can be used as a weapon is not allowed in school," she said.
