CARY, N.C. - In their first Southern Derby Cup match of the season, the Atlanta Silverbacks drew even with the Carolina RailHawks 2-2.
David Hayes scored the equalizing goal in the 83rd minute, just a minute after Carolina's Jamil Walker put the RailHawks on top 2-1 with a goal of his own.
In the first half, Jason McLaughlin put Atlanta on top first 1-0 off an assist from Ansu Toure in the 16th minute. But former Silverback Daniel Antoniuk tied the game up 12 minutes later.
Both Atlanta's Ryan McIntosh and Carolina's Chris McCellan allowed two goals and made four saves in the net. Carolina outshot Atlanta 11-10 and won five corners to Atlanta's four. The RailHawks also had the rougher end of play, committing 15 fouls to the Silverbacks' 12.
The Southern Derby Cup is a fan-created battle between USL First Division teams in the southeastern United States. The RailHawks won the contest last season in their first year of play. Atlanta's next Cup matchup will be May 24 on the road against Charleston.
