WINDER - New residents of Winder can learn tons about one of the area's prime attractions - Fort Yargo State Park - in a musical, summery setting come Saturday.
Those wanting to chill out by the beach are welcome, too.
Park officials have planned a two-hour program called Concert by the Beach for Saturday, featuring the classic grooves of the Yargo Community Concert Band.
Patrons are urged to dust off picnic baskets and converge near the park's Beach Pavilion. The event melds good music with the chance for patrons to learn more about the Friends of Fort Yargo, the park's fundraising arm.
"They're not going to be asking for donations or anything," said Dan Schay, the park's assistant manager. "It's basically to get people familiar with the group, with the park and what they offer."
The event is free, save for a $3 parking charge. The park is located one mile south of Winder on Ga. Highway 81.
The concert is the first of its kind in 2008, though patrons have enjoyed similar soirees in past years, Schay said.
The Winder-based band, comprised of musicians from Alpharetta to Social Circle and all points between, played the park's Christmas celebration last year, Schay said.
Adopting the motto "Music for a Lifetime," the band "hopes to bring musicians, both young and not-so-young, together for the love of music," according to the group's Web site.
Schay expects the show's appeal will be broad, attracting "people interested in the park, and music lovers and folks interested in their local community and Fort Yargo," he said.
