Ellis Francis Britt, Sr., age 80 of Winder, formerly of Dacula, passed away Friday, March 28, 2008. One of thirteen children, he was born December 5, 1927 to John Claude & Mary Jane Phillips Britt of Lawrenceville. He was raised into a farming family & spent most of his life living in Gwinnett County, graduating from Snellville High School in 1945. His passion & expertise as a master gardener stayed with him throughout his life. As a WWII veteran, he served over a year in the US Army as well as 14 years as an officer in the Georgia National Guard. He also worked for the government with the Department of Agriculture, the US Postal Service & retired from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta in 1980 after 26 years of service. For 40 years, he was an active member of the Lion's Club, & served in all officer positions local & regional. With a long-standing interest in the community, he served on the Gwinnett County Board of Education as a member & chairman from 1981 to 1984, as a chairman of Resource Conservation & Development government organization as well as several other voluntary citizen committees & civic organizations. He was also an active member of Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula for many years. He married Florence Craft Britt of Elberton, & together had four children. After her death, he was married for 42 years to the late Ruth Osborne Britt of Lawrenceville. He is preceded in death by daughter, Jeanine Britt, & leaves behind daughter & son-in-law, Beverly & Ken Swanton of Dacula, son & daughter-in-law, Ellis Jr. & Megan Britt of Dacula , daughter & son-in-law, Allison & Kenneth Hanson of Covington, daughter & son-in-law, Laura & Dick Johnston of Wellington, Colorado, step-daughter, Gay Jackson of Lawrenceville, five grandchildren & two great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother & sister-in-law Jim & Doris Britt of Grayson, sisters & brothers-in-law Barbara & James Smith of Cumming, Carolyn & Barron Osborne of Dacula, several cousins, nieces & nephews. Funeral Services will be held 11 AM Monday, March 31, 2008 in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Britt and Rev. Paul Hanson officiating.
