'Atonement'
Rated: R Movie: 3 1/2 stars out of 4 Disc: 3 1/2 stars out of 4 If there was a "biggest loser" during this past awards season, "Atonement" was it. Although it won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, it was largely snubbed by the Academy, a group that usually drools over this type of movie. Mixing the wartime complexity of "The English Patient," the romantic disconnect of "Romeo and Juliet" and the misplaced jealousy of a confused little girl, the film is a sweeping and haunting epic which sports one of the most imaginative and twisted endings of all time. The extras go into great detail and point out the complexity of adapting Ian McEwan's best-selling novel for the screen, and director Joe Wright's thoughtful and in-depth commentary is captivating and thoroughly top-notch.
