Col. Hubert Lester Nolan (Ret.), of Lawrenceville, GA, passed to his Eternal Life with Jesus on his 91st birthday, March 8, 2008. Col. Nolan received a BS in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from Georgia Tech and MS in ME from Purdue University. He retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Army after 32 years of service having served in China in World War II being a charter member of the 14th U.S. Army Air Force (Flying Tigers). He also served in the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Hawaii, Korea and Vietnam. He served seven years in Washington, D.C. on General Staff in Research and Development assignments; was site Activation Director for the construction, emplacement and activation of the only Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) System Complex to become operational in the U.S. which brought the Soviets to the bargaining table to sign a treaty in 1972 banning ABM Systems in either country; was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and four Army Commendation Medals. He was the first Eagle Scout in Rockmart, GA, and was a Mason. He was a committed and loving Christian, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He spent his retirement years being a gentleman farmer and running interference with their parents for his eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Born one of 5 children to Samuel Clemon Nolan and Mary Magdalene Gentry, Col. Nolan is survived by his Wife of 71 years Julia Elizabeth Jameson Nolan of Lawrenceville, GA;Daughter and Son-in-law Anna Nolan Shackelford & Robert Wayne Shackelford of Snellville, GA;Daughter, Linda Nolan McAllister of Lawrenceville, GA; Son, Michael Nolan of Athens, GA; Son, Phillip Samuel Nolan and Daughter-in-law, Bonnie Bahney Nolan of Jefferson, GA. He is also survived by 11 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Great Grandson and numerous Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces, Great Nephews, Great-Great Nieces, and Great-Great Nephews. The Service Celebrating the Life of Col. Nolan will be held Monday, March 10, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Wages Lawrenceville Chapel with Rev. Cecil Clegg and Rev. Clarence Cannon officiating.Interment will follow at East Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors.The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
