Luxury homes burn outside of Seattle

WOODINVILLE, Wash. - Three seven-figure dream homes went up in flames early Monday in a Seattle suburb, apparently set by eco-terrorists who left a sign mocking the builders' claims that the 4,000-plus-square-foot houses were environmentally friendly.

The sign - a sheet marked with spray paint - bore the initials ELF, for Earth Liberation Front, a loose collection of radical environmentalists that has claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks since the 1990s.

N.J. parents of student found dead in landfill sues school

TRENTON, N.J. - The parents of a 19-year-old student whose body was found in a Pennsylvania landfill after a frantic, four-week search filed a wrongful death lawsuit Monday accusing his college of not securing its trash-compacting system.

The Superior Court lawsuit does not specify a damage amount in the death nearly two years ago of John Fiocco Jr., a freshman at The College of New Jersey just outside Trenton.

Fiocco was last seen alive early March 25, 2006, in a dorm room after returning from an off-campus party where friends said he had been drinking.

Soldier arrested in slaying of military couple

TACOMA, Wash. - A Fort Lewis soldier has been arrested for investigation of killing a military couple and abducting their 7-month-old girl, sheriff's deputies said.

The 22-year-old woman was booked into the county jail Sunday night for investigation of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of kidnapping, Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman is an active-duty soldier with I Corps at the Army base south of Tacoma and a member of the honor guard, Troyer said.

Former neighbors describe man sickened by ricin as introvert

SALT LAKE CITY - A hospitalized man who may have been sickened by the deadly toxin ricin was described by former neighbors on Monday as an introvert who often moved around and who loved animals.

Roger Von Bergendorff, who has been at Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas since Feb. 14 - unconscious, according to police and the FBI - also has had financial problems, filing for bankruptcy in 2000.
