Youth Roundup: Buford rallies to take USTBA state title

The Buford Wolves 14U travel baseball team rallied from a 14-2 deficit to defeat the NYO Red Devils 15-14, in the championship game of the USTBA Georgia State Championship.

Buford found itself losing 14-2 in the bottom of the 5th and facing elimination when it began its unbelievable comeback by scoring eight runs. After scoring two in the 6th, the Wolves scored three runs in its last at bat, driving in the game winning runs with a double to left field.

Buford went 5-0, including bracket play wins over Sawnee Mtn. Thunder and East Cobb Cubs.

Team members are Kyler Berrett, Sam Clay, Nic Dlugasch, Mason Gentry, Clay Gant, Troy Herterick, Avery LaBuz, Spencer Lovelady, Austin Lloyd, Zach Nolan, Zach Nitzel and Chris Stewart.

LaBuz, Clay and Herterick were named to the USTBA All-State tournament team. Stewart was named tournament MVP and each player was awarded a sterling silver state championship ring.

The Buford Wolves are coached by Chris Gant.

BASEBALL

Mill Creek captures state title

The Mill Creek Hawks 10U travel baseball team won the 2008 Georgia Baseball Players Association (BPA) state tournament in Dalton on June 15.

The Hawks hurlers pitched three shutout games and the defense held its opponents to a total of three runs in five games. The Mill Creek bats produced 31 runs, including three home runs in one game against the Reebok Suns.

Team members are Gabe Davenport, Austin Elliott, Matthew Lewis, Loren Matzick, Joshua Pickens, Justin Reppert, Jacob Weisenberger, Kobe Wharton, Brett Whitford and Tyler Zak.

The team is coached by Rod Davenport, Doug Lewis, John Reppert and Keith Elliott.

SOFTBALL

Major All Stars win Tri-County tourney

The Major All Stars won the Tri-County tournament and went undefeated in All Star play this postseason

The team went 12-0 to sweep first place in the South, Pre and Tri-County tournaments. During that span they outscored their opponents 141-54 in 12 games. On Tri-County Championship Day they rallied to win in their final at bat to get to the Championship game. Then they fought off a furious charge from a tough Brookwood team to win the tourney.

Team members are Lindsey Baxter, Aly Bonnes, Danielle Christensen, Cassidy Culberson, Samantha Daugherty, Cara Desandre, Kaylyn Gagnon, Kaylee Hennelly, Danielle Kates, Lexi McKnight, Natalie Osucha and Danielle Sosebee.

The team is coached by Paul Hennelly, Rob Desandre, Ken McKnight and Paul Totman.

Duluth reaches Tri-County finals

The Duluth Wildcats, 14U junior all-star team, took second at the Tri County championship at Bogan Park.

It's the first time a team from Shorty Howell Park at has placed in the tournament in that age group.

The Wildcats reached the finals by beating Grayson 6-3 and then lost to Brookwood 6-1 in the championship game.

The Wildcats will compete in the ASA state tournament in Cumming on June 27-29.

Team members are Lexi Porter, Autumn Poole, Erin Lipps, Shuntarius Jefferson, Alex Smith, Kala Brown, Jeanie Perrucci, Adriana Perrucci, Aubriann DiPietro, Teresa Stemp, Christy Tillotta and Adriana Perrucci.

The team is coached by Mike DiPietro, Ron Smith, Fred Stemp and Mario Perrucci.

Rams take USFA championship

The 97 Grayson Lady Rams, a 10-under travel softball team, won the USFA Southeast Regional championship tournament on June 21-22 in Fayettville.

The Lady Rams went 6-0 on their way to the championship.

Team members are Carley Batchelor, Kory Best, Vanessa Bischoff, Emily Boothe, Bailey Hanson, Remington Hasty, Caroline Sandhagen, Stephanie Snyder, Jennifer Spangler, Sydney Stevens and Taylor Wise.

The team is coached by Greg Hasty, Robbie Sandhagen, Mark Stevens and Bill Batchelor.

SOCCER

Fury captures state title

The 91 Norcross Fury Gold, a U17 boys soccer team, won the U.S. Youth Soccer Georgia state championship and qualified to compete in the south regional championship.

The team will be among the more than 184 top boys and girls U.S. youth soccer teams from the 12 state associations competing for the regional title on June 19-25 at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III Championships in Raleigh, N.C., and Wilson, N.C.
