Wenal murder: Police identify man of interest

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett police said Thursday they have identified a person of interest in the May murder of Eva Kay Wenal, the wife of a prominent developer.

Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said the person of interest was seen approaching Wenal's house on foot May 1, the night she was slain. He was also seen in the vicinity the night before the murder.

Hal Wenal, the woman's husband, told police he arrived home from work shortly after 6:45 p.m. and found his 60-year-old wife face down in a large pool of blood. He then ran to neighbor's house and the neighbor called 911.

Schiralli said the man is not a suspect in the murder "but it is imperative that police speak with him," he said.

Hal Wenal, who is offering a $100,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of a suspect, held a news conference a month ago in which he made a public appeal for leads in the case. There, he said he was unable to return to the home - located in the 1900 block of Sugar Lake Court - because it was too difficult. He also said he has sat through "endless hours" of interviews with investigators. Authorities said he is cooperating with the investigation.

His development firm, Flexxon Operating Ltd., is responsible for shopping centers such as the Village Shoppes of Sugarloaf and the Village Shoppes of Flowery Branch.

Authorities have declined to say how the woman was killed.
