The Spiderwick Chronicles:
2-Disc Field Guide Edition Movie: 4 stars out of 4 Disc: 3 1/2 stars out of 4 One of the reasons "Spiderwick" worked so well is that it took a series of books and condensed them into a single, streamlined movie, instead of spreading them out into what would have likely been a pedestrian-level franchise. Equal parts "Harry Potter" and "Narnia," it stars child phenomenon Freddie Highmore as polar opposite twins who, along with their leery older sister, wage war against fantastical woodland creatures looking to take possession of a magical book of secrets. The two-disc set is overflowing with engrossing bonus material, which, like the movie, packs a punch and doesn't attempt to waste our time. Technical specifications: aspect ratio: Widescreen (16:9), audio: English, French and Spanish (Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround), subtitles: English, French and Spanish. Special features include: Seven making-of featurettes Deleted scenes (Paramount, $34.98.)More like this story
