NORCROSS - A lovers' spat turned deadly this weekend, when a man allegedly strangled his girlfriend before calling police to turn himself in.
Police found the body of Elba Mejia-Mesa, 44, of Norcross, at a Norcross apartment Sunday morning, after her boyfriend allegedly confessed to the crime. Gwinnett Police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said Andres Luis Rodriguez called 911 from Winters Chapel Road in DeKalb County, claiming responsibility for the death. DeKalb County officers asked Gwinnett police to investigate at the man's home, Lake Colony Apartments at 3000 Lake Colony Drive in Norcross. There, Gwinnett officers found the deceased woman and conducted an investigation before transporting the man from DeKalb to Gwinnett police headquarters, Spellman said. She said police obtained "enough probable cause" during an interview with the suspect to charge him with one count of murder. Spellman said Rodriguez strangled Mejia-Mesa because he believed she was being unfaithful to him. Rodriguez, 39, is being held at the Gwinnett County jail. Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call the Gwinnett County Police Homicide Unit at 770-513-5300.More like this story
