Paul Newman battling cancer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Paul Newman, the legendary actor and philanthropist, is battling cancer, his longtime neighbor and business partner said Wednesday.

Newman, 83, has recently appeared gaunt in photos, and dropped plans to direct a play in his Connecticut hometown. Writer A.E. Hotchner, who partnered with Newman to start Newman's Own salad dressing company in the 1980s, said the actor told him about the disease about 18 months ago. He did not specify what kind of cancer, but said Newman is in active treatment.

'I know that it's a form of cancer,' Hotchner told The Associated Press. 'It's a form of cancer and he's dealing with it.'

Newman issued a statement late Tuesday that he's 'doing nicely' but didn't specifically address questions about cancer. A call was placed to his spokesman Wednesday seeking comment.

Hogan's wife asks judge to hold him in contempt

Linda Bollea is asking that Hogan be jailed in Pinellas County. That's where the couple's son is serving an eight-month sentence after pleading no contest to causing a crash that seriously injured his friend.

Councilman apologizes to actor for using mug shot in ad

CINCINNATI - City Councilman Chris Monzel has publicly apologized to Emmy-winning actor Rip Torn for using his mug shot in a campaign ad on crime.

Monzel, who won re-election last November, said a black bar covered Torn's eyes in the TV ad. The photo, available on Internet sites, came from Torn's 2006 drunken-driving arrest in North Salem, N.Y.

Monzel said the ad was meant to depict a generic criminal and discuss his efforts to 'get sexual predators off the streets.' He said the ad wasn't meant to have anything to do with the 77-year-old actor.
