LAWRENCEVILLE - Kurt's Restaurant in Duluth is celebrating its grand reopening and merger with Vreny's Biergarten by giving back to local students.
Partnering with Duluth Kiwanis and Gwinnett County DFCS, Kurt's is asking patrons who attend its open house event to bring book bags and school supplies for Book Bag Benevolence, which provides supplies for children in foster care and Child Protective Services to start the new school year. Those who donate will be admitted to the festivities for free.
"I thought it was a wonderful cause and it fit in perfectly for our event," said Alexander Eisele, the restaurant's manager and son of owners Kurt and Vreny Eisele. "It's for a cause that's right here in our community."
The open house event will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
The event will also feature live entertainment by singer Christian Tinsley and a beer and wine tasting, which is included in event admission. Eisele said the tasting will feature a selection of unique wines and beers, some of which are on the restaurant's menu and some are being considered for inclusion.
Kurt's unveiled its new look for the merger at the beginning of July. For those who haven't seen the changes, Eisele said Kurt's, which was more formal than Vreny's Biergarten, has been dressed down and Vreny's has been dressed up. "The new look is basically just combining the two dining rooms into one," Eisele said.
The restaurants also merged menus: "Basically we took the most popular items from Vreny's Biergarten and the most popular items from Kurt's and put them together," Eisele said. "You have the option of getting a $9 sandwich or a $30 filet at the same place. It's the best of both worlds.
"We're trying to bring a whole new life back into the restaurant," he added.
