Youth roundup: Pistols reach Final Four

The Georgia Nike Pistols 16U team placed fourth at the AAU national championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

The team was undefeated in pool play and advanced through the championship bracket to the Final Four by beating teams from Oklahoma, Missouri and Indiana. The Pistols lost to the Silver Bullets (N.Y.) in the semifinals and the Garner Flames (N.C.) in the consolation game. The Silver Bullets won the tournament for the second year in a row.

Gwinnett County players on the team are Anne Marie Armstrong (Wesleyan), Erin Hall (Wesleyan), Chaney Means (Greater Atlanta Christian) and Monique Weathers (Mill Creek). Other team members include Ashley Brown (Lumpkin County), Jaymee Carnes (Gainesville), Tesia Davis (Marist), Courtney Freeman (Madison County), Kayla Freeman (Madison County), Whitney Hagan (Marist), Ashley Morris (Franklin County) and Sharon Swanson (Cherokee). The team is coached by Roland McAbee.

Armstrong and Means were selected to the All-America team.


Ice claim national title

Kristina Nelson and Kaela Davis, rising eighth-graders at GAC, led the Georgia Ice to the 12U AAU National Championship.

The team is coached by Antonio Davis.

Georgia Elite wins at Suwanee

The Georgia Elite 15U girls basketball team won both the 16U and 15U Tournament of Champions events this past weekend at Suwanee.

It was sponsored by Michael T. White and Reebok and is a major exposure tournament for college coaches. The Elite went undefeated (12-0) in both events, running its record for the year to 35-4.

Team members are Alex Abraham, Katie Carroll, Andraya Carter, Lauren Coleman, Baleigh Coley, Erika Ford, Abby Slocumb, Maggie Smith, KaVonne Towns, Kayla Upchurch, Annie Wheeler and Stephanie Wheeler. They are coached by Tim Ellis, Lynn Carroll and Keith Slocumb.


Rams take tournament title

The 97 Grayson Lady Rams, a 10-and-under travel softball team, won the ISA World Series Warm-Up tournament July 12 at Turner Lake.

The Rams went 4-0 on their way to the championship.

Team members are Carley Batchelor, Vanessa Bischoff, Emily Boothe, Bailey Hanson, Remington Hasty, Caroline Sandhagen, Stephanie Snyder, Jennifer Spangler and Sydney Stevens.

The team is coached by Greg Hasty, Robbie Sandhagen, Mark Stevens and Bill Batchelor.


Mill Creek wins Dixie state title

The 8U Mill Creek Dixie Youth Baseball All-star team from Buford won the Dixie Youth State Championship in Monticello on June 28 through July 5.

Sixteen teams from across Georgia advanced through their respective districts to compete in the double elimination state tournament. The Mill Creek all-stars posted a 7-0 record during the tournament and outscored opponents 51-9.

Mill Creek pitchers recorded five shutouts during the tournament.

Team members are Aaron Sawyer, Chase Marusarz, Charlie Erickson, Dalton Bullock, Landon Jones, Jacob Grafton, Corey Britner, Reese Olson, Davis Sharpe, Noah Davis, Steve Kirk and Avery Gunn.

The team is coached by Duffie Sharpe, Barry Grafton and Steve Erickson.

Hawks capture district crown

The 10U Mill Creek Hawks claimed the central division district title, advancing to the state tournament. They finished fifth at state.

Team members are Will Maijala, Mike Cataldo, Christian Rainwater, Blake Hockaday, Tyler Vernon, D'Marcus Guillory, Conner Conkel, Parker Watts, Seth Brown, Patrick McKay, Sammy Orjuela and Luke Weaver.

The team is coached by Chad Watts, Jim Conkel, Pat McKay and Tim Weaver.

Falcons win district, place fifth at state

The Dacula Minor National All-stars won their district championship July 3 in Winder.

The win sent the team to compete in the state championship tournament. It is only the second time in Dacula history that this has occurred in this age group (9-10 year olds). The last time was in 2004.

The team finished seventh at the state tournament in Manchester on July 10.

Team members are Austin Brennan, Jonathon Hawkins, Devin Britt, Hunter Straw, Dalton Mines, Logan Irvine, Noah Uhry, Chase Francis, Kelly Krueger, Mitchell Rude, Steven Hayes and Mason Bailey.

The team is coached by Ralph Francis, Philip Brennan and Rob Rude.

Dacula All-Stars place fifth

The Dacula Major League American All-Stars competed in the Dixie Youth Baseball State Tournament from July 5 through 10 in Columbia County and came home with an impressive fifth-place finish.

The Dacula All-Stars picked up wins over Crawford County and Collins Hill American before falling to eventual finalist Columbia County North.

Team members are Cam Argo, Steven Bluse, Drew Branning, Coleton Brindle, Jack Clark, Trevor Dewberry, Gage Murray, Crew Peery, Mitch Pettus, Nate Tuggle, Joey White and Jake Wolfe.

The team is coached by Keith Dewberry, Jim Bluse and Steve Argo.

Hawks to play in national tournament

The 11U Mill Creek Hawks from Buford have been invited to the AAU National Championship tournament in Disney World from July 20-27.

The winners of several local and state tournaments they will play teams from Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virginia and Texas, just to name a few.
