SUWANEE - Construction of a new park on Suwanee Dam Road is entering its final stages of development, city officials said.
Sims Lake Park, which is expected to open near the end of July, is on the former 62-acre estate of Rae Hewell, the co-owner and founder of Peachtree Windows & Doors.
The new park is part of a citywide initiative to preserve greenspace and the historic cemetery on the property, Suwanee spokeswoman Lynne DeWilde said. Occupants of the cemetery date back to the early European settlers of the region, DeWilde said.
In addition to having about 1.2 miles of walking trails, the park includes a seven-acre lake that has more than 2,900 feet of shoreline. Two 2-acre meadows are available for open play and picnics.
According to DeWilde, the park is also home to a four-table pavilion that can be rented for special occasions.
Construction of the park, which was funded through Suwanee's $17.7 million open space bond, began Oct. 12 and was the result of a six-month planning process developed by the city.
The park will also include a playground with three separate parts for kids of all ages, though the park may open prior to the playground's completion, DeWilde said.
