CUMMING - Authorities have identified the Duluth teen who drowned Friday in Lake Lanier as 17-year-old Aeriel Cotuc Chaudjay.
Chaudjay drowned near Little Ridge Park in central Forsyth County, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Karleen Chalker said Saturday. A native of Guatemala, Chaudjay was with several friends in the water Friday afternoon but went missing at some point, Forsyth County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jason Shivers said. Unaware he was underwater, Chaudjay's party conducted a land search but could not locate him, Shivers said. Forsyth County divers were then called, eventually finding the teen's body in 10 feet of water about 45 feet from the shoreline. It is suspected Chaudjay was underwater for about 30 minutes before emergency workers were called, Shivers said. Toxicology tests proved negative and foul play had been ruled out, Chalker said. Forsyth County authorities are asking the public, especially inexperienced swimmers, to be more vigilant at the lake. "It's not the same lake it used to be," Shivers said. "There are so many drop-offs and other hazards now, even with full pool levels."More like this story
