Former Berkmar star and Memphis signee Wesley Witherspoon has survived the first cut to make the USA Basketball U18 National Team.
The 6-foot-8 forward was one of 14 players still with the team after four players from the original set of 18 trials invitees were released following three days of practice.
The final group of 12 players will be named when two more players are cut next Tuesday. The team will then head to Formosa, Argentina, two days later to compete in the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
Witherspoon, who was a Daily Post first-team All-County selection after averaging 18.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for Berkmar (23-6) in his senior season, is trying to join a long list of big names to have played for the U18 National Team, including former Meadowcreek and current Michigan State standout Chris Allen.
