2 men charged with vehicular homicide

LAWRENCEVILLE - Two Gwinnett County men were arrested Monday on felony charges stemming from two separate vehicle accidents in which people died.

Javier Colin-Cambren, 20, of Norcross, faces a single count of vehicular homicide for allegedly killing his passenger, Gadiel Sanchez, 21, of Doraville, on Jan. 16.

Colin-Cambren was allegedly driving a 2000 Ford Ranger without a license when he made an unsafe lane change on an Interstate 85 exit ramp and flipped the vehicle.

Police said Sanchez was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He later died at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

The two-car accident happened the night of Jan. 15 at the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and the southbound I-85 exit ramp.

Colin-Cambron was not injured. The driver of the second vehicle, a 2003 Saturn, also escaped without serious injuries, police said.

Colin-Cambron remained in the Gwinnett County Jail on $110,100 bond Tuesday.

In a separate case, a Snellville man was also arrested Monday for killing a female passenger during a Jan. 21 crash.

Charles Thomas Smith, 54, faces charges of vehicular homicide, DUI and traffic violations stemming from a crash on Green Valley Road in Snellville.

Snellville resident Patricia Yvonne Shushtari, 51, died in the crash, according to an arrest warrant.

Smith made an unsafe lane change and lost control of the vehicle, which struck a group of trees, the warrants says. He admitted to police he had been drinking but later refused a blood test at an area hospital.

Smith remained in jail Tuesday without bond.
