Sarah Ruth Schumacher and Lt. Derek Mitchell Smith were married June 30 at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens. The Rev. Stephen Walters officiated the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Kym and Pris Schumacher of Suwanee. She is a 2002 graduate of Collins Hill High School. She is a 2006 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia and a 2007 graduate of the University of Georgia, where she received a master's degree. She is employed as a kindergarten teacher in Manassas, Va.
The groom is the son of Ryan and Eileen Smith of Stone Mountain and Patrick and Wanda Hopkins of Lula. He is a 2002 graduate of Collins Hill High School and a 2006 cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia. He is attending medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., as a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force.
Emily Schumacher of Suwanee served as the bride's maid of honor.
Bridesmaids were Maleah Griffin of Birmingham, Ala., and Lindsey Franklin of Lawrenceville.
Lauren Schumacher and Rachel Schumacher, both of St. Louis, served as flower girls.
Lucas Griffin of Birmingham, Ala., served as the groom's best man.
Groomsmen were Bret Robbins of Texas and Michael Cohen of Roswell.
Marilee Compher of Warrenton, Va., served as the ring bearess.
After a honeymoon to Hawaii, the couple now resides in Centreville, Va.
