SUWANEE - Community members have the opportunity this week to review two sets of Gwinnett County Public Schools' proposed instructional materials.
The review of proposed middle and high school advisement materials, which ends Thursday, is taking place at four locations throughout the county: the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee, the school district's Safety and Security Building in Lawrenceville, the Grayson High School Technical Education Program Building in Loganville and Duluth Middle School in Duluth. The material under review includes to books used by adult advisers, not just counselors, said Jorge Quintana, a school district spokesman. Each middle and high school student is matched with an adult adviser who can help them with personal, social and career development, as well as academic questions. Also under review are the proposed technology-based instructional materials for elementary and middle school mathematics classes. Those materials are intended to supplement the textbooks, Quintana said. That review will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday in a computer lab at the Instructional Support Center. To ensure that technical support is available during the review, parents and community members who wish to participate must make an appointment by calling Sheila Manley, a mathematics office program assistant, at 678-301-7037. The school district gathers input from the community on proposed instructional materials, and the public comments are taken into consideration before district officials make recommendations to the Gwinnett Board of Education, Quintana said. Board members will later vote to approve instructional materials based on the district's recommendations.
