Vacant building under renovation catches fire; cause unknown

DACULA - Fire authorities are investigating what caused a fire in a vacant building in Dacula on Tuesday.

Gwinnett County firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at a building on Second Avenue and Wilson Street about 9:03 a.m.

According to a Fire Department press release, the building is currently under renovation and the fire was discovered by construction workers who reported to the job site Tuesday morning.

Fire crews quickly extinguished a small fire in the bathroom of the building and found no extension of smoke or fire.

The blaze was contained to the bathroom and caused minor damage to the building, the release said.

No injuries were reported.

Tags, sensors taken off stolen bikes

LAWRENCEVILLE - Three bicycles were stolen from a Discover Mills sports store in Lawrenceville last week, a police report said.

Price tags and security sensors were reportedly ripped off the bikes before they were taken from the Sun and Ski Sports on Sugarloaf Parkway some time between 7:50 and 8 p.m. Jan. 17.

Medicine, condoms stolen from Pleasant Hill Walgreens store

DULUTH - A customer shopping inside a drug store in Duluth last week noticed a man taking items from shelves and leave the store without paying.

According to a police report, the customer notified a Walgreens manager who told police the a Hispanic man left the store with out paying for over the counter medicines and condoms.

The man fled the store on Pleasant Hill Road in an older model red Mitsubishi Eclipse with three other Hispanic men.

Men arrested for beating, stabbing

SUWANEE - One Gwinnett County man was arrested Sunday on charges of beating a man at a home on Stag Run in Suwanee. His alleged partner in crime remains at large, according to jail records.

Warrants were filed Jan. 18 for the arrest of 22-year-old Justin Thomas Butler of 355 West Fork Way, Suwanee, and 24-year-old Michael Anthony Crawford of 1946 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, Lawrenceville. The pair allegedly punched and kicked a man causing bruising and marks during a quarrel New Year's Day.

They are both charged with simple battery. Crawford is also charged with two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly stabbing the man multiple times causing "serious injury" as well as possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, the warrants said.

Butler remains at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond.

Dirty chimney leads to fire at home

WINDER - A dirty chimney caused a Sunday evening chimney fire at a home in the 1500 block of Hardigree Road in Winder, firefighters said.

The fire started at 8:10 p.m. Firefighters found fire coming from the top of the chimney and around the fireplace.

The fire was contained to the chimney and it did not displace the home's occupants.

"We want to remind homeowners that it is very important to have their chimney cleaned each season," said Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for the Barrow County Fire Department. "A chimney fire such as this could very easily have destroyed the home."
